The Purpose of Continuing Legal Education

Lawyers need to be on top of their game all of the time. To be prepared or not can mean the difference between a judgment in your favor or a judgment against your favor. Once a law student has been admitted to the bar the training does not stop there. To be a true professional in the field you must pursue continuing legal education.

Continuing legal education covers a variety of topics that are vital to both new and practiced lawyers including: basic skills, ethics, elimination of bias, prevention of malpractice, substance abuse and more. This additional training ensures the professionalism of each individual lawyer and legal practice as a whole. Also in many states in the U.S., continuing legal education is mandatory for attorneys who want to maintain their license to practice law. A prospective client must be able to fully believe in the experience, training, competency, and knowledge of their attorney in order to be well represented. CLE will provide the background and training necessary to make this happen.

Much like college courses CLE have hours and credits associated with training. Back in the day, this would be mean attending classes, going into lecture halls with other law students, listening to lectures, jotting down notes and so on. Nowadays however, online CLE is available for many students who want to continue their legal training but do not have the means to travel long distances to attend each course. This new innovation has seen an uptake in interest due to its convenience. Many state colleges and universities have been on this bandwagon for quite some time so it makes a whole lot of sense for professional training institutes to incorporate this as part of their curriculum. A student over 50 miles away with a webcam and a microphone can just as easily be part of the class as anyone physically present in the room. Another option is for the student to download recorded audio from the class that has been uploaded by the teacher or professor. From there, the student can learn at their own pace and convenience. This was of educating lawyers has many benefits for the educational institute including less overhead costs and more spaces for students who either want or must be sitting in the lecture hall.

With the many options available for continuing legal education courses, present day lawyers have a much greater advantage over their counterparts of just a decade ago. For those of us on the other side who may need a well-trained attorney someday, we are indeed lucky.
