Families with low income have a greater chance of having a diet that is far from nutritionally sound. With less access to funds they have to rely on the small amounts of food they can afford or worse, fast food. Without a proper variety of food in their lives, their entire immune system will undoubtedly be negatively affected. This is, of course, tied in with the health of their teeth. If someone is only subsisting on cheap burgers and fries and soda on a daily basis with only a smidgen of nutritional view, their ignoring of other essential vitamins only works against them. Thankfully however, many of poor families have access to federal and/or state-funded assistance and programs. One such program is Medicaid, which is a health program for those with little to no resources for medical care. Using this program, low-income families can afford Medicaid braces and other dental services from NY orthodontists.
It is very important to take care of your teeth. To have unhealthy teeth will negatively impact your eating habits. One of the benefits of Medicaid braces to low-income families is that it can help correct crooked teeth. Having misaligned teeth means the chewing process won't be at its best and makes cleaning them that much more difficult. Since it is harder to clean crooked teeth, there is an increased risk of tooth decay, cavities, and even gingivitis. Also, having bad teeth will impair the proper chewing of food which will lead to digestive problems. Pain from biting is also a common problem with having crooked teeth.
Another dental issue that can be fixed by orthodontists are over bites. This is characterized by having the upper jaw extend the teeth further out than the bottom half. Under bites are the other way around but is much rarer. Either of these things are bad and can cause strain to the jaw and muscles. It also increases the risk of breaking a tooth. Another problem stemming from over/under bites is that either can cause tooth enamel to wear down, increasing the chance of teeth breaking.
Orthodontists can provide poor families with the proper care they need to take care of whatever dental issues they may have. These specialists can also provide information on what they should be eating and how to maintain healthy teeth. With Medicaid assistance, low-income individuals can devote extra resources to providing themselves with a healthier diet.
