Years ago parents didn't have to worry about what their children were doing on the computer, if you even had one. When I was a child, the most you could do was play 8-bit video games and type up a document. But now Internet safety for children is a big deal. Actually, it's a big deal for every age group. Parents have to accept the fact that their children are going to be using computers once they hit the age of two. It's just the world we live. And that means teaching child safety tips to them is imperative.
Start by keeping the computer in the family room or some common area. This will allow you to better monitor the activities on the computer. Plus kids will feel much less compelled to look up things they know they shouldn't be since you could just walk in at any moment. Become computer literate yourself and learn how to block certain material. It's much easier now than in the past. Not only can you set up protection right from the computer, you can also look into special software to better ensure nothing will be bypassed. Some kids aren't searching the Internet for inappropriate material. Some just might be willing to snatch a credit card and order some toys or clothing. Don't put it past your children to learn the art of online shopping. So monitor your credit card and phone bills carefully. Teach your children the importance of anonymity on the Internet. They should never reveal any personal information and they really shouldn't be engaging in online chatrooms. And it should go without saying they should never agree to meet someone! Sometimes it's hard for younger children to realize there are people out there who intentionally want to harm children, but you must explain that it can occur. There are some warning signs that your child might be targeted by a predator, such as your child spending hours online, especially late at night or he shuts off the computer when you walk into the room.
Of course as your children become older, it becomes even more difficult. Soon they'll want a computer in their own room and it won't be as easy to monitor them. But in order to promote family safety, you have to take an active role in your children's online activities. Well, you have to take an active role in everything they do. Although it might seem intrusive, you have to be an involved parent. The digital age poses many threats to all people. Teach child safety tips about the Internet to keep your kids away from online danger.
