Storage units save us from the clutter that tends to build up in our homes over the years. We've all got a little hoarder in us; items we just can't bear to part with. Properly storing items is crucial if you plan to have everything last for quite some time and remain in excellent condition. But I'm not just talking about placing dishes in tissue paper and breakables in bubble wrap. Certain items need to be in a climate controlled storage unit, otherwise a wealth of issues could arise.

Despite the digital age, vinyl records will continue to be popular items to collect. Whether you have records from the '70s or you're going on a vinyl kick and purchasing newer released ones, you can't expect to store them in a typical unit. Extreme temperatures will cause the records to warp and there goes any money they were potentially worth. It also means you just can't enjoy some classic tuneage!

Any type of books, magazines, comic books, etc. will also need to be in a climate control storage unit. Preferably magazines and comic books should be in plastic sleeves to better protect them. Ever notice that books at a library smell like moth balls and the tips of the pages are yellow? Yeah, I think that's actually cool looking too, but your books will deteriorate much faster if not kept at a constant temperature and are well protected. You don't have to create a special low oxygen room, but you have to do something to keep them from aging.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that electronics need to be in a controlled temperature as well. If you ever looked at the owner's manual, they should never be stored in places that can become too hot or too cold. All that gadgetry inside can become ruined, more so if the room gets too hot. Unless there is an arctic freeze, I doubt the device will get frostbite! But overheating is definitely not good and outdoor storage units can become quite stuffy and hot during the summer.

People who might be storing an old car, whether a classic or just old, should invest in these storage units as well. It's bad enough that the car isn't being used, but the fluctuations in temperature will not fare well for the engine. In the winter especially, the cold can cause the battery to die and possibly damage the engine. Then when you go to use it, you won't be able to start the car.
