Family heirlooms are an interesting tradition. What each family values is so different. For some, it's a piece of jewelry, for others it's a simple piece of décor. It doesn't even have to be an item that has any monetary value. You give it value by carrying on this time-honored tradition. For whatever reason, it means something special to you and your family.
In my family the heirloom is a watch, a Stuhrling watch to be more precise. It began with my grandfather. When my grandfather sought a new timepiece, it wasn't his intention to purchase a watch that would be passed down from generation to generation. He just wanted a watch to help him keep track of time. Back then, there were not cellphones and tablet computers to rely on. Back then, owning a watch was more of a necessity than a stylish accessory. But that didn't stop him from choosing one that would accentuate his outfits. He took into consideration everything from the mechanics to the quality to the band strap.
What he ended up with was a Stuhrling Original, a watch that embodies everything he desired. He chose a chronograph watch with a silver metal band, knowing that it would last must longer and be more durable than leather. It's sleek and simple, yet exquisitely beautiful. It is a watch that one can be truly proud of. And because Stuhrling watches are Swiss, the quality is superb. It's no wonder it has lasted three generations so far!
When my grandfather reached his mid-seventies, he knew it was the right time to pass along his watch. My own father had admired it for as long as he could remember. My grandfather was just pleased the watch lasted as long as it did. He didn't intend for the watch to embark on a journey through our family. And now that my father has gotten up there in age, he decided to keep the tradition alive. For now, the watch is here for me to enjoy. Of course it needed a little cleaning up and fine tuning, but the watch is still going strong. But unlike some family heirlooms that have to be locked in a case, never to be admired, I choose to wear my Stuhrling Original as often as I can. It's wonderful to know that even decades later the watch doesn't look dated. It's as beautiful as the day my grandfather purchased it.
Stuhrling watches are more than worthy to be heirlooms because they stand on the principle of quality. They are more than just timepieces. They can have value and meaning if you place it upon them.
