People come to us all the time asking "Will hypnosis work for me?", or "I don't believe in hypnosis". The other big statement we get all the time is "People have told me that they went for Hypnotherapy to stop smoking, and then lit a cigarette the second they left the consulting room". We hear this day in and day out so we've now decided to produce an article on just how hypnotherapy works and how it can help you.

The Conscious Mind

Before we can tell you how hypnosis works we need to understand the mind. Our minds have two areas. The conscious mind and the subconscious mind. The conscious side is the critical side that deals with the logical aspects of life and is the side that analyses everyday situations. The conscious mind looks after our short term memory and enables us to remember such things as what we watched on television the night before or what we had for our evening meal.

This part of the mind tries to make sense of everything and is very critical. However it does have its limitations and the biggest is that it cannot get in touch with our inner most feelings, the things that really motivate us. Unless we can bypass our conscious mind we don't stand much of a chance in solving any of our inner most issues such as stopping smoking using hypnotherapy, losing weight through hypnotherapy etc. This is where the Subconscious mind comes in.

The Subconscious Mind

Our conscious mind looks after the critical and analytical side of our lives whilst our subconscious mind looks after our emotional and intuitive side. This part of the mind is best described as a large database that carries huge amounts of information including our long term memory. The subconscious is extremely powerful and as it looks after our emotional side of our feelings it also helps protect us and can block out bad experiences should it be necessary. Only if we can tap into our subconscious mind can we help with curing phobias, bad habits etc and this is where Hypnotherapy comes in.

The Science behind Hypnotherapy

There are hundreds of articles and books on the subject of hypnotherapy but as we now understand how the conscious and subconscious mind help us in our daily lives we now know that in order to change our habits and cure phobias we need to basically talk to the subconscious part of our mind. Hypnotherapy is the gateway to the subconscious. Through various induction methods during hypnotherapy treatment you will bypass your conscious mind and talk directly to the subconscious allowing all those wonderful changes to happen.

One important thing to note is that hypnotherapy relies totally on consensual behaviour and if you as the client do not want to enter into the hypnotic state nobody in the world can make you. One final point is that hypnotherapy helps millions of people everyday all across the world with their phobias and bad habits so we shouldn't be too concerned with how it works. All we need to know is that In short Hypnotherapy works if you as the client want it to work.
