Over looked crappie baits

Can crappie be caught on natural crappie baits other then minnows? Yes, but few anglers rigging live bait for crappie ever switch from minnows to other enticing live baits because 90 percent of the time there is no need too. Crappies will normally strike minnows like rosy reds and shiners the majority of the time. But what about that other 10 percent of the time when crappie minnows just are not producing anything? Big crappie love to eat sunfish fry and in the early spring this is a great is one of the great crappie baits to use in ponds. Head to the shallowest points in the pond you are going to fish and start throwing your cast net to catch your sunfish fry. Only keep the 1 to 2 inch fry this is the size you will want to be rigging live bait for crappie.

In many areas where shad and crappie thrive together shad will comprise over 50% of the crappie diet and you will benefit using them when rigging live bait for crappie. They are probably considered to under used because you won't find them alive in bait stores. Many bait store sell frozen shad as cutbait for catfish but shad do not keep well alive in captivity. They can however be caught very easily and used as crappie baits if used immediately after capture. If you can find the shad schools you can capture your shad and fish them immediately on the outer edges of the schools. Here again when you throw your cast bait net keep sizes from 1 to 3 inches long.
