It's that aging thing. . .sigh. . .and we're not exempt, Women of God! Yes, it can be put off, neglected or even hidden, but it can't be stopped. By God's love we are more than conquerors (Rom.8:37).
Could it be time to look at this from another point of view? Ladies, could the real question be: Does staying beautiful bear a high price tag? Can we, or rather, how do we age with beauty? And, by the way, where is our dignity in the whole equation? Lord, we need some certainty put to this issue.
There's one thing we know for sure. God wants us free. Truly free. No incumbrances, no deceptions, no fears and nothing fake. This freedom gives us so much, and costs us nothing. Now there's something to be excited about! Our Lord said it Himself so well when He gave us this tender invitation:
"Get away with Me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me. Watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't put anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." Matt. 11:28-29 The Message
This is how I want to live out this God-ordained time. It's a lifestyle in the certainty and security of those unforced rhythms. I recently got a very sweet reminder.
My husband and I were in the Denver airport last month where I remember pawing through magazines at a convenience store and spotting this "gotta have it" tabloid I used to love. Always the ravishing model on the front, it sported three cover article titles attempting to gain entrance to my cash stash. "Ten Quick Ways to Dump Belly Fat" "Stopping Father Time" and "Now You Can Afford that Face Lift".
No, I'm not really shocked anymore. I shook my head, sighed, and suddenly saw this ticket tape streak across my mind shouting: Expensive, unhealthy and possibly dangerous.
With a spirited lilt I walked empty-handed to the gate and said to my unassuming husband, "My body never was and never will be perfect, and I'll never be 18 again. That's fine." He grinned. I ran my fingers through my head of thick silver hair, and gave my hips a love-tap remembering what our daughter said a few days before: "Mom, your hips are gone!" (I'm also enjoying a new way of looking at food and choosing what goes inside this 'temple' of mine, and I'd lost 12 pounds since she'd seen me last.) I glanced at my hands. My nails are as weak as I am, but I smiled at the natural youthfulness I notice without the acrylics I had once assured myself were necessary for my survival. Most of all, in that moment, it was the look on my husband's face that did it for me. He knows I'm enjoying a new-found freedom, and he's enjoying it, too. His eyes told me of my real treasure, and it will forever be enough for me. "You're beautiful," he whispered with a smile, "and I'm glad you're here with me." All my faults and shortcoming considered, priorities are ever changing as I learn to trust God's gifts and God's plan. Living free and lightly with an appreciation for and confident trust in my loving Creator (Who, by the way, knows me better than anyone does) is what I want to be remembered by. The simplicity of living in the love of Jesus is where I've found that a Christian woman experiences dignity, true beauty and ageless destiny.
