From soft drinks to medicine, it would be a rarity for the modern consumer to purchase products absent the tamper seal. Intact tamper seals provide an immediate, visual assurance that a manufacturer has done everything possible to ensure the safety of their products. This means that packaging plays an important role in each of our purchasing decisions.

Manufacturers know that there are two things that give them leverage when a consumer enters a retail establishment: product placement and packaging. Have you ever wondered why a supermarket chooses a specific layout, or why certain products are displayed at the checkout stand? Consumers respond to many visual cues, including the color of packaging, the size of the packaging or even the association of one product with another. For example, DVDs are frequently sold next to snacks that you can enjoy while watching a movie. So, if you thought you made purchasing decisions based solely on your preferences, think again. The power of subtle suggestion is almost irresistible.

The act -- or should we say art -- of merchandising is the manner in which a retail establishment presents merchandise to its consumers. And based on consumer research, effective merchandising accounts for nearly two-thirds of all product sales. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that merchandising is a billion-dollar industry! However, pretty packaging and product placement isn't everything. Although the merchandising of products is a billion-dollar industry, consumers still want to have faith and confidence in a particular brand. This makes product safety a priority. In fact, many consumers downright refuse to purchase items that appear to be compromised.

Enter tamper-evident packaging (e.g., a tamper seal or tamper seals on a variety of products) to correct any misconceptions. As an extension of the merchandising industry, tamper evidence must be prominent as well as visually appealing. For this purpose, tamper-evident packaging is frequently attractive; having a clean and professional appearance along with bright coloring and legible text. Research and history has shown that merchandise sales plummet whenever there is the fear (real or assumed) that a particular product is no longer safe to consume. Consequently, reliable and consistent tamper-evidence quality, or the lack thereof, can make or break a brand.

Put simply, a tamper seal builds trust between the consumer and manufacturer. So, the next time you pick up that soft drink in the supermarket cooler, or a non-perishable item on aisle five, remember to confirm that the tamper seal is intact.
