Far too many eBay sellers open eBay's listing template and then think: "What category shall I advertise in? What title shall I use? What words shall I use in my listing?" No wonder so many sellers fail with such a lack of preparation!

The APPEARANCE and CONTENT of your listing WILL influence potential buyers and can affect whether your item sells and what final price it sells for.

Think of your listing as your salesperson. If you were employing a salesperson, you would expect them to look professional, not scruffy, nor dress loudly or garishly. Likewise your listing should look professional, not scruffy, nor should it be too flashy.

You would expect your salesperson to speak professionally, clearly and knowledgably but avoid gobbledegook and techno-babble. Likewise the text of your listing should be clear and concise and give the reader all the information they need to make an informed decision to buy your product without waffle and jargon.

Don't forget that your listing has only ONE aim - to MOTIVATE the reader to BUY your product. If they find your listing interesting and informative, or marvel at how good it looks, but they DON'T bid, your listing has failed.

Your listing's TITLE, PHOTOS and TEXT should combine to follow the "AIDA" format for EFFECTIVE direct response advertising. AIDA stands for Attention, Interest, Desire and Action):

1. Attention

The listing title must ensure that your listing not only appears in the relevant search results of your target market but, together with your gallery photo, has to grab their ATTENTION so that they will take a look at YOUR listing.

2. Interest

Once your title and gallery photo has grabbed their attention encouraging them to click on your listing, the text and layout must hold their attention and build and hold their INTEREST so that they keep reading.

3. Desire

As they read, your listing must build their interest in your product in to DESIRE for your product so that they want to buy your product, and want to buy it from you, rather than just "window-shopping".

4. Action

And finally your listing must build sufficient desire to motivate them to actually TAKE ACTION NOW and commit to bidding on your auction, or using the Buy It Now facility.

So don't bother listing your item for sale until you've designed a listing that addresses all the above. Doing this can greatly increase the number of bids that your listing receives and increase the price it eventually sells for.
