Starting a community watch is the best step you can take to ensure the protection of your own home. Community watches are effective and the most cost efficient method to protect your neighbor from theft and vandalism. Starting a program may seem like a difficult undertaking, but it can be far simpler than you imagine.

It doesn't take a great deal of commitment to begin a Community Watch Program. A regular meeting or communication amid a community will often suffice. Your neighbors can keep an eye out for much more than just home burglary.

Community watch programs are noted for protection against home burglars, but the protection often goes beyond that. Community watch areas have less automobile theft and incidents of mugging. A community watch can also alert the authorities, such as the local fire station or paramedics, when non-burglary incidents or accidents occur.

Community watch programs will ensure your home is safe if you go on vacation or must travel for work. A lower crime rate can benefit the community in numerous ways, including increasing the value of properties. You can begin a program in your community right now.

Your community will need to come together periodically to be effective. Some groups have weekly meetings, others monthly, and still others hold them semiannually. Your schedule should accommodate your life as well as those of your neighbor's. You will need some community communication to keep all aware of changes, incidents, or issues that everyone needs to address.

Many communities find open communication makes their programs far more effective. You should have a means of contacting your neighbors, for emergencies and to share any important news. This can be through a phone chain, email, telephone, or any other communication method. Most importantly, by simply displaying a sign in your window, children will know which homes they can go to for safety and feel comfortable asking for assistance if need be.

Some community watch programs charge a small annual fee for membership within the community. This should only be a minor amount per year with all proceeds going to public signs, pamphlets or promotional materials for new members, and to provide refreshments or materials for meetings. The greatest reason that community watch programs are effective is that they are primarily free.

Always inform local authorities that you have organized a community watch program for your area. The authorities can provide your group with information on local crime rates, the most common criminal activity, and the best methods of preventing crime on a local level.

If you still have more questions, a great source of information is another successful comunity watch pogram.
