There are many individuals out there who have never felt like true artists but have been artistic enough to go to graphic design schools and turn a passive interest into a full blown career. You don't have to be an expert painter or someone who is always working on a new sculpture or sketching out amazing portraits to be an artist; all you need is a set of finely tuned skills that you can put to work when you create new projects. You may have just considered art school for the career possibilities, or because you have a passion for creation but lack the necessary skills, and either way, working to get a design degree will grant you exactly what you need.
A serious question to ask yourself is what type of designs you are interested in creating and what career field such designs would be best suited for, because going to school to benefit a career does little good if there is no industry that suits your interests. For instance, you may have a tough time finding a school that will help you sharpen your skills and land a job in arts and crafts that features pasta and craft glue, but if you are interested in creating unique and innovative homes and living spaces, you will find many opportunities waiting for you.
In reality, there are many practical career opportunities that can be nursed from a passing interest in a particular art form, like turning a hobby of editing family photos into a job where you edit photos of models for major fashion magazines. You may enjoy doodling humorous cartoon characters while you are just sitting around, and those doodles could end up becoming your ticket to a career in sequential art, animation, or even flashy logo design.
You may not actually have a talent or natural interest in art at all and simply think graphic art and design could be turned into a nice career, and you would still do well to find a good art school and enroll. Even if you aren't great at drawing with a digital art tablet or editing photos or using software to design concept art or illustrations, you could learn everything you need to know through a proper education and studying.
It's all a matter of figuring out how to use special software, how to use various brush strokes, and other skills that can be taught, in spite of whether or not it came to you naturally. So instead of worrying over your lack of ability, start searching for some good graphic design schools that can teach you the abilities you have to have and help you jumpstart a new creative career.
