As part of increasing your eBay knowledge and becoming a successful seller, it is often beneficial to understand the bidding philosophy from the point of view of the buyer. Even on an auction website, perception is everything and if the prospective bidder does not feel comfortable they will then have a reason not to bid on your item. Unfortunately, a major reason for sellers not succeeding is a lack of effort leading to others to profit from your mistakes.

Don't leave yourself open to a tactic used by clever buyers that can be defended against quite easily. The general advice to any seller is to have items that have good pictures, clear descriptions and a user friendly experience to ensure the buyer is given maximum confidence to buy from you. A great service will boost your feedback rating and therefore other bidders will be more likely to bid on one of your future items.

But what if you are lazy and offer an item for sale that has no picture, one line of description together with a very low feedback score or none at all? Ask yourself who would bid on an auction item that has been presented in this way. Well, you maybe surprised but some do. A savvy bidder could take a calculated risk and bid anyway thinking that the seller does not really know what they are doing and would be happy to accept any bid as until then, with the poor presentation and low feedback score, your auction item has been ignored.

The bidder may submit a bid for a very small amount and actually win as there was no minimum bid placed on the auction. It may be hard to believe but there are people on eBay who make good money from winning auctions like these. You ask yourself why they do this. It is because they have identified a demand for a product and have found your auction that is very poorly presented with a low feedback score and thus everyone else has avoided you like the plague. No-one is willing to risk doing business with you even though you may well be the most trusted person on the planet. On eBay, perceptions count and an auction presented like this will never be successful for you.

The savvy buyer will then take attractive pictures of the item, write an enticing description and then offer it again on eBay for a much higher price. Prospective bidders will search for such an item and find it. And as it has been presented very well the bids will start to flood in and the profit will go into the new seller's pocket rather than yours and you will have lost out. All it takes is a little bit of effort to ensure your item is the one that catches the attention of the prospective bidder and entice them to start the bidding. Once others see the activity it is only human nature for them to start bidding as well. Just a little bit of effort has transformed your fortunes from selling an item to the only bidder for a very low price to selling the same item after a flurry of bids from hungry would be buyers.
