Contactless credit cards are the latest technology offered by credit and debit card companies, designed to make smaller payments at checkouts and supermarkets much more quicker. These cards using radio frequencies to communicate with the wireless card processing device, to process and complete the financial transaction. The technology is commonly known as radio frequency identity, or RFID.
The use of RFID technology lets shoppers to purchase items and checkout without the need to enter a personal pin number. Credit cards which use RFID have a radio frequency chip embedded on them which sends the necessary data to the reading device to complete your transaction.
Although this technology has many benefits, it also has its drawbacks. The first is of course security of your card, and it's details. Card scanners can be purchased online quite easily, which makes it simple for would be thieves to scan your card without your knowledge, and possibly use this information to make fraudulent purchases, or to make a clone copy.
It's no surprise that credit card companies and card issuers are improving on the technology to increase it's security, and make it harder for your personal card data to be stolen, however there are also ways you can minimise the risk of credit card theft. We have compiled a short guide on the best way to keep your details safe:
1. When you do not need to use your cards, leave them at home. If you don't make regular purchases, you can instead opt to carry standard debit cards or cash with you. By leaving your RFID enabled card at home, there is no risk of its data being scanned.
2. If you do carry around RFID credit cards, you should consider purchasing a RFID blocking wallet. These wallets are designed to block any signals which are attempting to read your card information, and are extremely effective. RFID blocking wallets can be purchased online in a range of designs and colours, and many look like a traditional wallet.
3. If you don't want to purchase a RFID wallet, you could purchase a rfid blocking sleeve for use on your credit card. You simply keep the credit card within the sleeve, which can then still be carried in your own wallet or purse without worry.
4. Monitor your credit card statements regularly to ensure all transactions are valid. As soon as you see a transaction you do not recognise, you should query it at the earliest opportunity. The quicker you put a stop to your card being used, you reduce the risk of huge financial loss. Some credit card companies may even offer a mobile SMS service, informing you of purchases made on a weekly basis, helping you keep track of your transactions quickly.
Protecting your credit cards can be a simple process, and perhaps the most effective method that we would recommend is via the use of a RFID blocking wallet or sleeve, which guarantees your details are kept safe no matter where your card is.
