There is a great number of different measures that people can take in order to protect their homes and their most loved ones. Although setting a home security system is proven to be one of the best ways, it isn't absolutely the only one which can make your property as secure as possible. It is known that once you have installed a home security system it is three times less probable that your home will be burglarized. However, the statistics also show that there were over 2 million home invasions last year alone.

It is essential to provide your place with greatest security, especially if you have children and if you have very valuable assets in the house. According to the statistics, the damage done due to a burglary is evaluated to approximately $2,000 or even more if you have expensive things. Therefore, installing a home security system is the basic step you need to take, but consider other safety measures as well.

In most cases, invaders know that the front doors are not sturdy enough and that only one or two kicks are enough the break into someone's house. That's why it seems reasonable that almost half of all burglaries are kick door burglaries. Therefore, don't expose yourself and your family members to a danger of being robbed. Make sure you fortify your doors and provide yourself with a peace of mind.

Be sure to know what material your doors are made of. Most doors are not made of hard wood, so it is very easy to break them. They may also have hollow cardboard cores that are merely covered by something that is not wood actually (the veneer). Due to this, make sure your doors are made of a solid wood or metal.

Pay attention to what kind of locks you have in your house. Very often contractors put cheap locks because they want to save money, or they put a deadbolt of a poor quality. Therefore, be sure to buy a grade one or two deadbolt lock, and especially the one made of solid metal. In addition, your locks should never have screws exposed on the outer part.

It isn't enough to have sturdy doors only, as your door frames should also be sturdy and well secured to the wall. No burglar will manage to break down your door frames if they are protected well. Besides, make sure that they come with 3-inch screws.

Have you checked what kind of throw bolt does your lock have? Usually, contractors want to save money by putting a short throw bolt, but if you would like to invest in a new lock it should have a long throw bolt, which is at least an inch long. What's more, you can make your doors even more secure if you invest in a double-throw bolt.
