Though Hankook tires are built to last for several thousand miles, there are often circumstances out of our control that result in unexpected flats. Knowing how to change a tire is an important part of driver's education that everyone should undergo prior to heading out on the open road for the first time. Yet, many people overlook this critical lesson, only to later discover themselves stranded on the side of the road.
First of all, you should always make sure that your vehicle is equipped with a proper jack, a wrench, and an appropriately inflated spare tire. This way when you do find yourself stranded on the side of the road you will have all of the things that you need to quickly remedy the situation.
Now, when you find yourself experiencing a flat or blowout, pull over to the flattest, safest spot you can possibly can. Turn on your emergency blinkers so that passersby will notice you are stopped and for your own safety, set your emergency brake. Find some large object, if at all possible, to place in front of and behind the tires that are not being changed.
Now place the jack under the frame near the tire that you are going to be changing. Most vehicles today have a notch that indicates specifically where the jack should go to avoid busting the molding plastic that many modern vehicles have near the wheel. If your car doesn't provide a clear indication of where to put the jack you may want to check the owner's manual for clarity.
Once you have the jack in place, slowly pump it up so that it is supporting but not lifting the tire. Then take the wrench and begin the process of removing the lug nuts. Removing lug nuts can take a bit of effort, make sure that you are turning the wrench in the right direction and provide ample force to break the resistance. Once they are loose, continue pumping the jack up enough to give you the room needed to remove the current tire and replace it with a spare.
Removing damaged Hankook tires should be done with a good deal of caution, particularly if you are on the side of the busy road. Once removed, carefully place the spare on the hub and snugly tighten the lug nuts with your hand and then the wrench. At this point you should be ready to head back out on the road, though you will want to get to a mechanic for a permanent replacement as soon as possible.
