Irrational, worrying thoughts are one symptom of an anxiety disorder and one that can be most disturbing. It feels as if your mind is playing tricks on you, betraying you. It can make you have concerns about your mental state, It is as if you are not thinking your own thoughts, you start to think like someone else in a new disturbing way.

Irrational thinking like this are just one of the side effects of an anxiety disorder. If you suffer from an anxiety disorder you become very introvert and introspective, checking to see what you are thinking all the time, repeatedly asking what you are feeling, are you anxious, thinking back on the day's events, reviewing how the day have gone. This over-thinking or checking in is a well known symptom of an anxiety disorder.

And it is also what causes the irrational, worrying unfounded thinking. This constant thinking starts to be a bad habit if we have an anxiety disorder, we magnify every situation, over-thinking things, thinking through all the possible scenarios, getting ourselves into an anxious frame of mind by imagining the worst case scenario in any situation.

How To Stop Irrational Thoughts

And although it drives you mad and you can't seem to understand how your mind can do these things, simply accept that anxiety and worrying thoughts, anxiety and irrational thoughts go together. They are simply a symptom of anxiety. Worrying thinking is absolutely normal if you are suffering from an anxiety disorder. I think of these as the what if scenarios. Even the smallest worry gets blown up out of all proportion as you continuously ask yourself what if, over and over again. It can feel as if you are set on coming up with the worst outcome to any potential problem or situation

When you have an anxiety disorder, every situation seems to be problematic. A simple headache can get you believing that you have a tumour on the brain, an upset stomach can convince you that you have a burst appendix, heart flutters caused by anxiety convince you that you are about to have a heart attack, a simple reminder letter about a missed payment will be a sign of impending bankruptcy.

Your rational sane side tells you not to think like this but your anxious side just continues to do it over and over again.

It is important with irrational worrying troublesome thinking that you understand exactly what they are; they are simply thoughts that have nothing to do with real life. They are just our normal thoughts and concerns blown up out of all proportion by our own anxiety.

Simply accept the thoughts for what they are and instead of stopping yourself from thinking them, let the irrational thoughts in, think through the various scenarios and accept that the thoughts are nonsense and irrational. By realising and accepting that an anxiety disorder can cause irrational thinking and by understanding that your thinking is a symptom of your anxiety, you neutralize the worrying irrational thinking, putting things back into perspective Stop telling yourself not to think like this. The more you try to stop yourself doing something the harder it becomes and themore importance you attach to it. Just try thinking a worrying thought through to its conclusion, deliberately looking at all the different outcomes. The end result is that you can make the worrying thoughts seem laughable and ridiculous, neutralizing them as you do.

Next time you start thinking like that, you can tell yourself of this and recognise these thoughts for what they are.

Remember, your brain took a long time to develop an anxiety disorder and coping with the symptoms can take some time as well.

Remember that worrying irrational thinking is just one of the symptoms of an anxiety disorder. Accept that idea, embrace it and you will take the first step towards overcoming irrational thinking and getting your life back on track.
