It should hardly be a surprise then, the association between anxiety and food being widely accepted that vitamins are now looked at as an aid to anyone suffering from anxiety.

Generally speaking if you lead a healthy lifestyle you will find it easier to overcome or at least cope with an anxiety disorder. With so many people having busy, hectic lives now in which our diet is usually the first part of our lives to suffer, it makes sense that taking vitamin supplements or a change of diet to help our day to day uptake of vitamins is bound to help with our anxiety levels. So which vitamins for anxiety are best?

Omega 3 is found in fish oil and is known to help with anxiety and depression. Described as "food for the brain" it is good for adults and children alike as it helps to maintain a healthy brain and improve how chemical messages move around the brain. It has been demonstrated through research that people who have a lack of Omega 3 in their diet suffer from anxiety and depression far more than those who don't.

As well as being in oily fish Omega 3 is also in things such as flax oil and flax seed. Omega 3 supplements are also available.

B Vitamins are a family of vitamins that are connected with good health. A deficiency can lead to, amongst other things, mood changes and insomnia, not really the type of symptoms that you would want to have with an anxiety disorder. Vitamin B is also believed to have a beneficial effect on anyone experiencing depression.

Vitamin B3 which is also known as niacin aids in the production of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter and is a mood enhancer. High levels bring on a happy, feel good state of mind while low levels lead to feelings of anxiety and low self esteem. Many of the drugs used in the treatment of anxiety target serotonins. Vitamins B12 and B6 also help the body to produce neurotransmitters within the brain and are essential ingredients in any anxiety diet. They are naturally found in beans, green peas, poultry, fish and grain cereals. Vitamin B supplements which contains all the vitamin Bs can also be taken. Vitamin C is found in most fresh fruit and vegetables and boosts the body's immune system helping to keep us healthy and free from minor infections, colds and coughs. Feeling healthier can only possibly help our general state of mind.

Vitamin E is believed to help act as an oxidant for our brain helping it to take in oxygen and reducing the damage done to the brain cells by free radiclas in the environment that can happen we are stressed.

There are also certain minerals that are good for anxiety and that should think about taking supplements for: A deficinecy in magnesium has long been related to anxiety symptoms such as irritability, depression, confusion and fear, along with insomnia and restlessness.

Amino acids are known to help our bodies produce neurotransmitters which are essential for a healthy nervous system.

In general terms, as long as you lead a healthy lifestyle, take regular exercise and have a well balanced diet which contains the right minerals and vitamins you will cope with anxiety much better.

If you feel that your diet is missing some of these essential anxiety beating vitamins then it could be worth looking at taking some vitamin supplements.
