The Adriatic Basketball League and the Future of European Basketball

Twenty years ago, if one would ask the question: "how may teams in the world are able to beat a professional American basketball team", the answer would probably be: perhaps one or two, assuming they play their best game and the American teams is not at its best. Today, there are dozens of teams from all over the world that are probably able to give a close match to many NBA teams, some of them virtually unknown outside of their local leagues.

The Adriatic basketball league or Adriatic basket in short, is an example of how much European basketball is continuing to advance and how new venues are continuing to eliminate the gaps between American and European basketball.

The Adriatic basket league was originally formed to fill in the gap that was created when the Yugoslav basketball league was discontinued. Today, however, Adriatic basket is much more than that. Some of the participating teams play both in the Adriatic basketball league and in the eauroleague. Maccabi Tel Aviv, the leading Israeli basketball club, has joined the Adriatic basket league this year, a fact that virtually transforms it from a local league into another European league. The fact that Europe is now the home of several high quality regional leagues, such as the Adriatic basketball league, the Balkan league and the Euroleague, has done much to allow smaller teams to develop. More international competitions and more games mean more ticket revenues and more media interest.

The Adriatic basket league has done much to bridge the gap between smaller and larger local basketball clubs. Experts now find themselves wondering whether a future merger of the Adriatic basketball league, the Balkan league and the Euroleague is possible. Some may go as far as to suggest the possibility of an even grander scheme in which an international league will be formed, in which teams from all over the world will participate. One can only dream about a future world-wide championship for teams in which, among others, American, European, Chinese and South American teams will participate.

If we get back to the subject of Adriatic basket such regional leagues do much to allow local teams to progress and develop their financial capabilities. With the world quickly becoming a global village, and seeing as teams from other regions have now joined the league, it looks like the Adriatic basketball league has a bright future ahead of it.
