If in the past football was the main sport that was considered an international phenomenon, basketball is now truly a valid competitor for the title of the most popular international sport. Recent years have seen such diverse leagues as the Chinese, the Brazilian and the Puerto Rican rise to much higher levels. The rising popularity of basketball is evident in tournaments like the world championship and the Olympic games. If in the past, such tournaments were considered easy for the American and top European teams, nowadays virtually all games are much closer and there are many surprises.

In recent years there has been a lot of talk about an international league which will combine the Euroleague and the NBA. Experts point out to several problems, both logistic and professional, that may make such a merger between the NBA and the Euroleague problematic. Whether or not such a league is even possible remains to be seen. In this article we will examine how the Euroleague and the NBA can join forces and also whether or not teams from other countries can join such an international league.

The two main obstacles that stand in the way of joining the NBA and the Euroleague are logistic problems that have to do with distance and accommodation and the different rules of the game which are applied in each league.

The distance is an obstacle that can be overcome by allowing Americal teams to spend an extended time on the continent. Each of the teams can spend a month or two in Europe to play against Euroleague teams.

As for the different style of play and the difference in game rules, such an obstacle can be overcome in two ways: one is having Americal teams play according to Euroleague rules while they are in Europe and vice versa and the other one is creating a modified set of rules which will combine Euroleague rules and NBA ones.

Involving teams from other countries, which are not regular participants in the Euroleague or the NBA league, such as China and Brazil may pose even more complex logistics problems. That being said, the prospect of having such an international league in which both Eauroleague and NBA teams will take place is so exciting, that in spite of the technical difficulties many experts claim that it will one day, and perhaps not too far in the future, take place.
