It is not easy to have IRS back taxes which you must pay to the government. The government will never forget these taxes and will go after the taxpayer with all the state's might and power. In such case, the IRS will do the collection for the government.
The IRS is After You
The IRS or the Internal Revenue Service, is an arm of the government which is tasked to implement tax laws, ensure compliance to them and go after those who fail to comply. The battle between the IRS and the taxpayer is not an equal fight, but it is a battle which the taxpayer will get into if he has IRS back taxes.
The Fight with IRS
IRS back taxes will result to the IRS availing of its various options to collect the tax due. When the IRS acts, it is not an ideal situation. IRS is persistent in its follow-ups and reminders for the payment of the tax. It can go after the properties, the livelihood and just about anything it can get its hands into in order to get the tax paid.
Understanding IRS Back Taxes
Taxes are needed for the government to operate. It is where the government gets the funds it needs for the payment of government employees, the implementation of construction projects, and the payment of utilities of government buildings. Indeed, the government is dead serious in collecting back taxes. It is also because of this why so much authority and power is given to the IRS for collecting them.
Make IRS Back Taxes go Away
The IRS will not stop as long as there are back taxes. What the taxpayer can do is to settle the back taxes. Consider the following options:
1. Pay the tax; 2. Compromise; 3. Pay in installment; 4. Avail the services of tax experts; 5. Do nothing.
The most obvious way to make IRS back taxes go away is to pay it. Perhaps the taxpayer simply forgot to pay the tax due to his busy schedule. In this case, just tell this to the IRS and promise to pay the tax. However, and most of the time, the main reason why there are back taxes is because the taxpayer has no money. In this case, the taxpayer may ask for a compromise or request for an installment manner of payment. In requesting for a compromise or for installment payment IRS can consider the financial capability of the taxpayer to pay.
Availing the services of tax experts such as accountants is necessary in case the taxpayer finds his tax a bit excessive compared to his computation.
The last remedy, which is to do nothing does not mean that the IRS back taxes will be settled. The tax due will also go away, not through the initiative of the taxpayer but through the efforts of the IRS. In this case, the taxpayer must prepare for the consequences of the IRS action.
