The majority of phlebotomists acquire their skills and certification within a span of a two years technical programs. The training entails a study of anatomy, legal requirements of blood collection, how to interact & relate with patients, aseptic techniques, standard precautions and blood collection techniques.

Phlebotomy technician training can vary anywhere from 2 days to 6 months, and certification/licensure requirements range from state to state. The cost for phlebotomist training courses are inexpensive starting as low as $200. Many of these course are offered during the weekends and evening hours. The flexibility of the training ensures that pursuing a career as a phlebotomist is easily obtainable.. This is the reason why many individuals seek a new direction in this highly respectable heathcare field.

Phlebotomist Certification

Phlebotomists obtain their certification from several agencies, including the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP- BOC), National Health career Association (NHA), American Credentialing Agency (ACA), the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), National Phlebotomy Association, American Medical Technologists (AMT) and other credible local agencies.

The certifying agencies recommend specific standards. The agencies ensure that the programs offer under their oversight adheres to comprehensive technical training and good business practices. It is therefore, advisable for prospective professionals to choose their phlebotomist school carefully.

Practicing Phlebotomy

Phlebotomy involves finding veins suitable veins from the patients from which blood can be extracted. By observing aseptic techniques, the vein is identified and punctured. The phlebotomist collects the blood in vacuum tubes, which are sealed using a rubber stopper. The phlebotomist is expected to find out the patients needs by communicating the doctor's request for the collection, selecting the ideal sample tubes for collection and evaluating the size of the vein in order to employ the proper gauge needle. An accredited phlebotomist school will therefore seek to inculcate the ideal values and skills.

An accredited phlebotomist school seeks to facilitate one or several phlebotomy degrees and certification programs to cater for different needs and requirements, including:

Phlebotomy certificate: This is an introductory certificate program that seeks to inculcate the basic skills required for finding entry in the industry. Certificates are awarded to candidates who satisfy the examining body.

Associate of Applied Science: This is offered to individuals seeking for more than the basic entry requirements. However, an externship program is recommended for the sake of gaining hands-on experience.

Graduate certificate: Phlebotomy technicians wishing to advance their career opportunities in order to take more responsibilities can consider the graduate certificate programs. They will be able to learn more advanced techniques of clinical procedures & technologies.
