Menopause refers to a transformation that occurs in women during which they stop getting their period and can no longer become pregnant. This is a natural process that happens to every woman eventually. Menopause occurs at various different ages for different women; however, it mainly occurs between the ages of 45 to 55 for most women. And similarily, there is a range of symptoms and everyone will experience different symptoms to varying degrees but there are many symptoms that are commonly reported.

During menopause, a woman's body undergoes several changes. There will no longer be any eggs released by the ovaries and her body will lower the production of estrogen and the progesterone. These particular changes are what lead to the various symptoms, signs and effects of the menopausal condition on women. In some women, menstruation begins to occur less often and then ultimately stops while in others, it suddenly comes to a halt. However, technically, one can only say that they have reached menopause when they have not had any periods for one year. The symptoms of menopause can last for up to five years. Apart from the halt of monthly periods, women may also experience hot flashes, heart pounding, sweats at night, painful sexual intercourse, urine leakage and vaginal infections among others.

Doctors can conduct various tests on a woman's blood and urine to be able to assess changes in the levels of hormones. These tests can be used to determine whether a woman is close to menopause or has already undergone menopause. However at times, the doctor might also have to carry out pelvic examination on the woman. A woman may also experience bone loss in her first years of menopause. Since menopause has different effects on women, there is a need to look for a way of handling these effects so that the qualtity of life of the woman is not affected.

The treatment of menopause may depend on the general health of the woman, the extent of the symptoms and also the preference of the woman. Hormone therapy is one of the treatments that can be used in coping with menopause. It is a preferable treatment when the woman is experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, vagina dryness and even mood swings. Hormone therapy has its benefits and risks of which every woman should be made aware of by her doctor before she decides to settle on these treatmentst. The woman should also tell the doctor her medical history to ensure that the prescription that she is given does not negatively affect her health status.

Bioidentical hormone replacement is another remedy that can be used in the treatment of the symptoms of menopause. It involves the use of hormonal dose supplements whose chemical structures are the same as those of the woman's hormones. Use of bioidentical hormone replacement depends on each woman's individual body and condition. There use involved the ability to extract certain compounds and turn them into hormones that are the same as human reproductive hormones in women. Bioidentical hormone replacement can be administered in the form of creams, injections or orally. The ready availability of bioidentical hormone replacement doses in most health facilities and the effectiveness and ease of use has made them very popular amongst many women today in dealing with the effects of menopause.
