The number one change, the one both women and men notice first as they get older, is making love just takes longer.
It takes longer to get the urge. You know, sitting there thinking, hey, might be nice to have a little roll in the hay.
And then it takes longer to go from thinking to actually getting ready for intercourse.
For both of you.
This isn't because there's something wrong with you. It is just one more fact of life about aging. Just like your knees and your brain, things don't work as fast, or on demand, like they used to.
The antidote to this when it comes to satisfying senior sex? Use or it lose it.
The more often you have sex, the more often you express your desire for one another, the more desire you'll have. And the more often you'll both want to make love, and be able to make love.
The second change is usually noticed first in women. After menopause women have lots less hormones in their bodies. It is these hormones that trigger the lubrication that women experience when aroused that makes intercourse so much easier for both of you. Now, it not only takes longer for the lubrication to flow, but some women find they hardly lubricate at all. No matter how long they try.
If that's the bad news, the good news is there are lots of "personal lubricants" in the market place to choose from. It's not that hard to find one, or two, or three, that both of you like.
They're everywhere, from the shelves of Wal*Mart to your corner drug store. The adult store on the highway out of town. And, of course, on the internet. Do a little experimentation to find the one that works for both of you. And then use it every time. You'll be glad you did. You can concentrate on pleasure rather than fearing it might be painful.
The third big change that happens to both men and women is that both of you will need more stimulation before you're ready for intercourse. A lot more.
The sad fact is, most people spend less than 2-3 minutes on "foreplay," the touching and snuggling before you get to what most people call making love: intercourse.
Remember this is all about love'n, not a race to the finish. None of us are as fast as we used to be. So slow down, you'll find it a lot more enjoyable.
A recent study from the University of New Brunswick in Canada found both men and women enjoyed more foreplay activities. The big surprise was women liked at least 13 minutes, while men said they preferred at least 18 minutes.
Think back to when you were only "making out" to get some ideas about how you can spice up your arousal techniques. Then use them.
When I suggested this to one couple, they decided to start going on special dates. On the way home, they'd spend some making out in the car in their driveway before coming inside. Some of their best times, they said.
Because it takes time for men to get erections, and women to get lubricated, even with your favorite lubricating gel, it just takes time to get ready for making love. For more satisfying senior sex, don't rush it.
Slow down. Check the clock. Then give yourself more than the three minutes most folks use. Aim for at least five to start. If you keep it up, you can easily work up to 10. Keep working, and you'll easily do 20. You'll be glad you did.
