To make an effective career move in these times requires learning a whole new way of looking at things. For example, seeing yourself as qualified to pursue multiple career options or ladders simultaneously is one exciting starting point.

Put that insight to work in real time. Make an effective, professional and rewarding career move. Focus on the all important first step, i.e. laying down a conceptual foundation . . . a sort of business plan.

In fact, finding a job is a lot like getting ready to start up a small business. To do it right, there are several key areas of planning that have to be attended to before you can do the business of career or job change.

I. You need to see yourself as a marketable product.

2. You must understand the benefits and assets of that product --what will attract the customers?

3. Anticipated resistance to buying the product must be addressed and resolved.

4. Customers have to be identified.

5. A marketing plan needs to be developed.

6. The product (you) and the plan need to be test-marketed.

7. Sales presentation strategies need to be implemented.

8. And, finally, deals must be closed.

When you understand that changing jobs is consistent with sound business practices, you're well on the road to the fail safe career. Taking a business approach to the job market means:

* Not sitting around waiting for the phone to ring.

* Learning new ways to assertively present yourself.

* Being willing to explore multiple options simultaneously.

* Mastering the principles of career negotiations.

* Taking the time to address a prospective employer's needs, rather than touting what you used to do for someone else.

* Handling legitimate concerns and objectives non-defensively.

* Putting a deal together based on your enthusiastic interest rather than jumping for whatever is tossed on the table.

In short, think of your career move in terms of the way a business is run. Make those principles work for you in your new, challenging venture: getting the best possible job with the highest possible compensation where your future growth is assured.

You're probably thinking, "This isn't the way I learned how to find a job!" Well, you're right. But you have to realize that thinks have changed a lot since the last time you were in the job market.

We've been through wars, Katrina and economic meltdown. They've dramatically impacted the job market. It's why you can't use old-fashioned last century methods to find a 21st Century job.
