"You know," someone told me once, "getting a job is really a very simple concept. You just have to realize that there's someone out there waiting for you to come along. All you have to do is find a way to get the two of you together."

Knowing there's a job out there for you sounds great.

Unless you're twisting in the wind because you can't get hooked up with the right position. Or, maybe you've been fired and you're getting desperate. Maybe you're jammed up in your present job with no moves left. Or you've followed all that career advice and nothing works.

There are very few of us who have not been worried about our job. And with good reason. It provides the fuel that fires what's important to us in life. A job is not just "what we do." In many ways it's who we are. Much of our life is defined by how we make a living.

So when the time comes to make a move, we prefer to do it as quickly and painlessly as possible. We hope against hope that the right situation will drop in our laps . . . the one which could kindle the excitement and energy we always dreamt the ideal job would provide.

But is that the right way to look at it? Not if we're really serious about finding a job in the 21st Century!

Making a move can and should be a dynamic and enthusiastic acknowledgement of our ability to grow . . . to be successful. Most of all it should show us we can be in control of our own destiny. And that means we can't be a shrinking violet about job or career change.

But why is this rite of passage so painful sometimes?

Well, it's hard to pull up stakes, isn't it? It's not easy to say goodbye to something we've grown accustomed to --a secure haven for our talents and earning ability. Worst of all, there's the uncertainty. Being cut off from the umbilical cord of an assured salary, work environment and friends can leave us gasping.

So, it should be refreshing to learn that changing jobs can be quick, energizing, rewarding and safe. If you do it right!

"Doing it right" means two things: changing attitudes about changing jobs, and dramatically changing the way you do it. It means learning that resumes don't get jobs. It means discovering that your next boss could care less what you used to do for someone else. It means practicing how to sell yourself with assertiveness.

In short, finding a job in the 21st Century means throwing out everything you've heard about job search and finding out the needs of your employer and using that as a starting point. That's the way to guarantee you'll have a short and productive job campaign.
