Renting a car seems like a convenience that will make your life easier when traveling, but that's not necessarily true. A renter must be knowledgeable of certain things to make the this easy and not get hit with ridiculous fees. Renters should also look into rental car coupons and other money savings methods available.

If the renter has just flown into a new city and is ready to rent at the airport then they can expect to pay more. So if the renter has the time, they should rent outside of the airport. Due to tax laws, the renter pays an automatic surcharge simply because they rent at the airport. If time is not a big issue, then locate a rental car company like Avis or Hertz that is off airport grounds. There are numerous Rental Car sites in all cities, so this task should be quick and easy.

If it is only one or two people using the rental car, then go for the smaller more economical models. Companies want renters to take the larger trucks and SUVs that will undoubtedly cost more. Don't let this happen to you. Ignore their sales pitch of more space and get the vehicle that suites your needs. If you stand your ground, you'll get the car you need rather than a gas guzzler.

If traveling through a variety of states is in your plans, make sure to check with the company first. Certain companies offer unlimited mileage, but only in the state (or certain states) that you rented. So if the renter goes into some states, he or she will pay outrageous fees.

Rental agencies often encourage renters to get insurance. They do this knowing most of us don't realize our auto insurance actually covers rentals as well! Take a look at your plan before renting so that you don't pay for insurance you already have. This is a completely unnecessary charge.

Finally, return your rental at the specified time. Rental companies can charge full day's rent for a car that is turned in late. On the same note, when you first rent, ask about any fees or charges that may be applied if the car is brought back early. Do not pay more for using the car less.

This is some sound advice for renting a car. Look for Rent A Car Coupons and other options for savings online and be a knowledgeable consumer who checks all his or her options and do what's right for you
