Automobile accidents are common enough but it seems that bigger vans like twelve passenger van and even 15 passenger carrier vans get into such accidents more often than other vehicles. 12 passenger vans show up more often in lists of accidents like those brought out by the NHTSA. Road safety starts with driver cautiousness but drivers of twelve passenger vans seem to have vehicles that have high crash rate. However, for schools and many organizations, using a 12 passenger van seems to be normal since they can carry a greater number of people around.
It is possible that there are some design or manufacturing issues connected with 12 passenger van that get them to be more dangerous for their passengers. Obviously, no automobile manufacturer sets out to make his multiple passenger van unsafe for passengers and other people on the road but the rather poor record of safety may be because such vehicles tend to roll over more than smaller vehicles. So in a crash, where another vehicle may at least still stand on its wheels, a twelve passenger van may just flip over and cause even more damage to people.
Most twelve passenger van spaces have been modified to accommodate the large number of people. For instance, the rear portions of the van may have been extended. While this in itself is not such a big deal, it becomes potentially lethal when you combine the fact that such a van has a bigger load capacity as well. At full capacity, most of the weight is positioned over the rear axle of the van. Now in the event of an accident, the driver may experience loss of steering control over his van.
This loss of control leads to the greater possibility of the 12 passenger van tipping over while still careening out of control. Unfortunately the category of a twelve passenger van provides the maximum ferrying capacity so it is very common for such a big vehicle to be used by many industries and sectors. Schools, as we saw before is only one such sector. One can see a van being used even by tour and travel operators, hotels, holiday groups, touring groups, public utility and hospitality services like airports and hotels and so on are just some of the sectors that are known to use a 12 or even more passenger van for their guests and patrons.
Many studies have revealed the latent instability of a twelve passenger van. Accidents and fatalities thus occur when a 12 passenger van fishtails and crashes more heavily into a barrier or another vehicle. Sudden swerves and sharp turns are not advisable on this kind of a big vehicle.
