Article writing offers free advertising. You don't have to take my word for it because the vast majority of people that use article marketing as an advertising tool will concur. Here's why.

First, you have to write an article on your niche of 500 words or more. Then you should submit it to as many article directories as you can. Each directory permits you to include what is referred to as an 'Author's Resource': a section at the end of the article where you say a bit about yourself, your website or your service (or all three), and include a URL to any web page of your choice. In fact, most allow at least two: double free advertising if you like!

To be effective your article writing has to look professional, and at least:

a) Your title has to draw the eye, and persuade people to read. b) Your article has to be well written and demonstrate a good knowledge of your subject. c) Your resource must persuade readers to click on your URL to find out more. d) Your URL must be related to the subject of the article.

What does this achieve?

1. When your article is read by people using the directory for information, they are liable to click on your link and visit your website. Since none of the above actually costs any money, that can only be described as free advertising.

2. Some people will copy your article and use it as content on their own website. They must also include your Resource. Therefore, your URL gets free advertising on somebody else's website. Not only that, but also that website will be highly likely to be connected with your niche, and therefore your product.

3. You will get links back to your web page from every directory that accepts your article, and also every website that uses it. That will help your Google PageRank and your search engine listings.

4. You article can be listed on Google, because each directory publishes your articles on its own webpage. It can therefore be listed just the same as any other webpage. That depends on how well you have optimized it for the search engines, which is one of the most important aspects of article writing.

There are things you can do to maximize the probability of your article achieving a high listing, though these are too extensive for this article, covering topics such as keyword density and latent semantic analysis.

However, employ these, and you have a fabulous opportunity to achieve page #1 listings on Google for your chosen keywords. Page #1 without having to generate a new web page or even needing a website at all. Article writing can generate free advertising for an offline store or even just a one-page minisite advertising a product.
