If you are interested in purchasing an engagement ring, chances are good that you have heard the old saying that you need to put at least six month's salary into it. While the salesperson would love for you to believe this, there are many different things to consider when you are going to purchase your engagement ring. Paying that much doesn't have to be the case. Purchasing a diamond engagement ring is something that can be straightforward, and by just keeping a few things in mind, you will have a better grasp on things, especially when you are thinking about purchasing something as lovely and rare as a blue diamond engagement ring.
First, take a look at what you need to know about the color of the blue diamond that you are looking at. Color grading in diamonds is done by setting a diamond next to a previously graded set of gems, and then the color is judged. The most expensive diamonds are the ones that are utterly colorless, and then they will go down in price from there until the color starts getting richer again. When you are looking at the color of your diamond, remember that in many cases, they will be judged to be part of a range rather than a specific rating. Unless you are specifically choosing a diamond that is large enough so that small gradations in color are fairly noticeable, you will find that there is nothing wrong with having a diamond that is judged to be part of a range. If you are set on a certain range, be aware that color grading can cost as much as an extra hundred dollars.
When you are looking for a blue diamond engagement ring, you will find that the next thing that you need to consider is the clarity of the stone. Clarity is the quality by which we judge how easily light passes through the diamond. An inclusion, which is another mineral, a fracture or sometimes a void in the diamond itself, will block the light. Clarity is judged by what an expert can see under ideal conditions with a magnification factor of ten. The highest grade of a diamond in terms of clarity is one that has been labeled as Flawless. Remember that a diamond that does not allow much light to pass through it is not a very good diamond; this is why it is possible to find diamonds that are only a few hundred dollars. Industrial grade diamonds are often graded as P1 or P2 and often do find their way onto the market.
The next factor that you have to judge when you are thinking about selecting a blue diamond engagement ring is going to be the cut of the gem. The cut of the gem relies exclusively on the skill of the person doing the cutting and you will find that the facets of the gem, when well cut, will act as mirrors that will reflect the light back towards the observers. The cut of your diamond will determine its brilliance, and it is worth noting that the most brilliant diamonds are invariably the round ones. Round diamonds have symmetrical proportions and all of the facets contribute towards the brilliance of the gem. Also consider cuts that might suit you, like the marquis cut or a diamond that has been cut into the shape of a pear or even a rectangle.
The final qualification you want to take a look at when you are considering a blue diamond engagement ring is the carat of your diamond, or rather, the size. Smaller diamonds are more common than large ones, and they will cost less per carat. On the other hand, remember that a large diamond can have issues with the color, the cut and the clarity and this can lower the price significantly. Consider the grade of the diamond that you are interested in owning and making your own decision based on that.
