Introduction To ADHD And Its Symptoms One of the common health conditions that affect children across the world is ADHD, also known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This is a medical condition that affects a child's brain. The child is unable to concentrate and focus as they need to and they are unable to keep still or pay attention in class or at home.
Signs And Symptoms Of ADHD The Symptoms of ADHD can be divided into three main categories. These are hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity. A child that is diagnosed with ADHD must have these symptoms manifest in their lives for a period of not less than six months. These symptoms should negatively affect the child in more than one area of their lives, such as home, school life and social settings.
Hyperactivity symptoms Symptoms that manifest themselves in a child when suffering from hyperactivity includes children suffering from hyperactivity tend to fidget with their feet and hands. They also tend to squirm in their seats. The child runs about excessively and leaves their seat when expected to remain in it. A child talks excessively and is always moving about.
Impulsivity signs and difficulties Symptoms that manifest themselves in a child when suffering from impulsivity includes the child blurting out answers to question before the question has been fully asked, interrupts or intrudes on other children and can hardly wait for their turn.
Inattention in children suffering from ADHD manifests itself with the following kind of behavior. The child experiences lots of difficulty in sustaining attention during learning or any other sessions. The child does not follow any instructions given to them and neither do they finish tasks. The child does not listen or appear to listen when spoken to or provided with instructions. The child also exhibits difficulties when trying or attempting to sustain attention. A display of difficulty in organizing tasks and other activities is also a symptom that manifests when suffering from inattention.
What are the side effects of the symptoms of ADHD In addition to the above mentioned signs and symptoms, children and young adults suffering from ADHD will also experience difficulties in learning and will exhibit failures in education. Also manifested in these individuals are conditions such as depression and anxiety. Parents also suffer great stress, exhaustion and anxiety. Treatment for both the patients and their parents is important and is highly advised.
