Tamper evidence (TE) describes many things, including preforms, shrink wrapping film, shrink seals, shrink sleeves, shrink tubing and more. Whether you buy beverages, medicine or even perishable food items, there's a good chance the package will feature tamper evidence in various forms.

Thousands of products hit retail markets every day. But before a new product comes to market, manufacturers must make certain the tamper-evident features are to scale. For this purpose, trial-packaging mock-ups are used to ensure that any preforms fit securely. Once the prototype-testing phase is complete, millions of products are shipped to your local store. Then, the inevitable happens: you make a purchase either impulsively or out of necessity. Have you ever wondered what exactly drives your purchasing decisions?

Nearly two-thirds of consumer purchasing is the result of strategic merchandising, and packaging and placement are the driving forces. With respect to packaging, coloring is king. Impulse shoppers will be attracted to packages with the colors of orange (urgency), red (energy and urgency), black (power or luxury) or blue (trust and security). The next time you drive around town, notice that banks and fast food restaurants frequently use the color blue, and products that need to be sold quickly will have either orange or red packaging or labeling.

Conversely, the color green is the easiest color for the eyes to process. Green advertisements and displays are used to help consumers relax during the shopping experience. The color yellow is used to grab attention quickly and conveys a sense of youthfulness, while the color purple is soothing and calming. Many anti-aging and make up products feature the color purple.

As you can see, there is a deliberate and logical strategy behind product packaging. And while all of these things are important to consumers, there's one thing that trumps this all: safety. Whether you are buying dairy products, cleaning products or toiletries, you want the packaging to represent quality, integrity and safety.

In keeping with the visual cues that influence consumer behavior, tamper evidence packaging, such as preforms, shrink wrapping film and the like, is the best way to convey this sense of safety. Not only does the packaging look good, tamper evidence is the best way for manufactures to ensure they do all that is necessary to protect the consumer. So, before you make the next purchase, question your motivations based on color, but always make sure the tamper evidence is intact.
