In hard economic times, there is little pride to be taken in spending a lot on a wedding. In fact, most brides will now brag about how much they saved over a traditional wedding.
Parents and brides used to brag amount the large number of guests they had at their wedding and the amount they spent. This doesn't happen much anymore. The average American wedding now costs close to $30,000 - and that's the "average" wedding.
There are plenty of ways to make sure you aren't one of those! There are many ways you can thousands, if not tens of thousands, of dollars on your wedding without anyone even knowing it. And if you can do it, why not? After all, if money isn't tight, there are still other things you could spend that money on - such as a new home or a vacation to remember too, wouldn;t you agree?
Let's start with the first thing you will buy - your dress. Few women buy a wedding dress at their local bridal shop. The mark-up is too high. Go ahead and try the dresses on there, but buy your dress online. At worst, buy it on sale.
Never, ever pay full price for a wedding dress. The cake and the reception catering can cost as much as a new car. That's a lot of money for one meal! Try and save money in this area, if you can.
Unless you are a rock star or royalty, you have no reason to buy a cake from a professional wedding cake creator. Most large grocery stores now have incredible bakeries staffed by creative bakers that can create whatever you want at a fraction of the price. Costs can also be cut in the catering of your wedding.
Make sure the reception venue you choose allows you to bring your own food in. By circumventing their "per plate" price, you can save a lot of money. "Open bars" are almost taboo in most modern weddings. Why would you want to encourage your friends and family to get drunk? Aren't they enough trouble when they are sober?
Save money by serving only a glass of wine with dinner or providing the opportunity for guests to buy their own drinks. You aren't being cheap, you are being responsible and looking after the health and welfare of your guests.
Remember - saving money on your wedding is a GOOD thing! Don't be embarrassed to try and save a few pennies!
