Learning how to write a proper resume takes time and effort. Many people find creating a winning resume a chore, which is a shame as a well written resume is your key to getting the job of your dreams. This article looks at some of the key points you should be aware of when preparing how to write a proper resume.
Before you begin, find the job ad or the employers job description and read it thoroughly, as this will guide you towards what the employer is looking for. You will then need to sit down and think about the skills and experience you have. Jot down your key skills and experience gained either from previous employment or if or are new to the job market, college achievements.
Once you have done this, match what you have written to the job ad or description. Is there a good match? Can you provide what the employer is looking for? If so, it's now time to start thinking how to write a proper resume in greater detail.
Many job seekers find resume fomats/layouts confusing and wonder which one they should use. A resume is simply a marketing tool with the main purpose to get the applicant a job interview. The format you decide to use should be the most appropriate one to effectively market your skills or achievements.
So if you are new to the job market, it is unlikely you will have much work experience so a functional resume format would be ideal. The functional resume is best for those who have recently left or will be leaving college in the near future. It can also be used by workers who have had an amount of time out of the work place or those looking to change career. The functional resume focuses attention on skills and achievements, rather than job titles and places of employment.
On the other hand if you have a steady work history or are staying in the same field of work, the chronological format will be more suitable. The chronological resume layout is the most familiar and generally lists your previous work history. It does not pay a great deal of attention to acquired skills or accomplishments. It's also the format that many hiring managers are comfortable with.
The final layout is the hybrid resume. This is simply a combination of the functional layout and the chronological layout and is suitable for those wanting to highlight their skills which can be transferred from one employer to another. You can also use this format when your acquired skills are strong and beneficial to the prospective employer or if your previous working history is different to the career you are considering moving into.
Choosing the correct resume format is key to understanding how to write a proper resume. Get this right and you will be well on the way to marketing your skills and experience to the hiring manager!
Did you know that a well crafted resume can give you a distinct advantage in the recruitment process and lead to that dream job? Why?
