Trees play a big role in our world one of the most useful ones to us is using the wood to build things. Although this is less common now with the invention of other materials we still rely on wood to make many items. Here are a few.

Desks

Imagine studying in a school where you didn't have a desk. Life would be much harder and you would spend a lot of time simply staring down at the floor which would be uncomfortable and probably make learning harder. Fortunately these days classroom desks are often made of plastic or other materials, however, the old Victorian-style desk with a hole for the inkwell and a hinged top beneath which you could store various items is a classic.

Decking

You can do a lot with your outdoor space from covering it in grass to paving it and it's not unheard of for homeowners to simply pour concrete over it for easier maintenance. However, decking is particularly fashionable and we need wood for that. It's rare that the decking actually extends over the whole of the garden space, but it is often used to place a table and chairs on and is always very neat at weeds find it difficult to grow there.

Ships

Obviously most ships these days are made from metal and other such materials however much was accomplished through the use of wooden boats and ships. In the early days man would transport himself across lakes and down rivers through simple rafts before the Vikings and others took to the seas, with great success as they used the stars to guide themselves.

Perhaps the greatest achievement man accomplished with a wooden boat was finding America and then migrating over the Atlantic there. Just thing how different the world would be today had Europeans waited until metal boats existed to cross the Atlantic. The USA would still be very much in its infancy or may have been colonised heavily by people from Asia. Consequently the rise of China may have been much earlier and the whole world would be very, very different.

As you can see the role of wood in construction has been central to human development and plays a big part in our world today. If you are thinking of making something large our of wood it might be an idea to hire a tree surgeon to cut the wood for you.
