A child undergoes two important stages in her life in order to attain his full potential.
These stages were studied and observed by a well-known educator, Maria Montessori. She is renowned for her Montessorian method and philosophy. She emphasized the importance of the child's active participation towards his environment.
In fact, there are a few Gold Coast preschools that apply the Montessori method and philosophy. They recognise the two most vital stage of a child's development.
The first stage of a child's development is the absorbent mind of a child.
This usually occurs at the time the child is born until she turns three. At this stage, a child takes in or absorbs his environment unconsciously. This is what a child intrinsically does. She looks at her surroundings, wanders around and adapts them. Hence, a child learns through living.
The second stage is the sensitive period. This consists of three types; order, movement and language.
A child is sensitive to order. She can easily distinguish any anomaly or difference in her surroundings.
When a child notices a glass of milk in the table and after a few minutes the glass is gone, she becomes insightful of the change. She learns through this process.
Second type of sensitive period is movement. A child at an early age does not know that she possesses feet and hands. In the long run, she becomes aware that these faculties help him to unravel the world around her. She then knows how to control them.
A child concentrates in her movements like walking towards a table. She intentionally has a purpose as to why she is moving. This is contrary to parents or adults. They sometimes move aimlessly or walk without any purposeful intent.
A child always has the intention to perfect her movements whereas adults do not share the same intent.
Finally, language forms part of the sensitive period of a child. A child notices sounds. She hears words. This is how she learns to speak. She learns through listening. At an early age, she constructs what she has heard then imitates them. A few years after, he is unstoppable. She keeps on asking questions and keeps on saying terms she finds amusing.
These two stages are contained in the Montessori method. A child develops into an intellectual being provided that she is guided with the Montessori method and philosophy that many Gold Coast Montessori childcare centres can provide.
