Video game tester job is one of the most sought after jobs especially by people who are interested in video games and in computers in general. People think that being a video game tester is just doing something they like and get attracted to it mainly for fun. In fact, video game testing is more than that. There is a lot more to it than only fun and excitement. If you are someone who is thinking of getting into game testing jobs, it is better to do some research first so you would have educated expectations about the exact job description.

A common misnomer about this job is thinking that game testers get to play video games all day, and during the entire game testing cycle. In fact, this is very wrong. A game tester does a lot more jobs than just playing. It includes doing monotonous tasks to continuously check for possible bugs in the computer program. He/she also uses his/her own voice and character to speak to each and every non-player characters (NPC) to record their responses during the testing cycle. In line with recording, a game tester is also tasked to count how many swear words there are in one game while taking charge of controllership (plugging or unplugging) at the same time in every stages throughout one game.

A game tester does not have control over which game would be assigned to him to test, neither is he allowed to have influence over his tasks. It is acutely expected of him to firmly focus on the game play to repeatedly check for glitches, and, from there, produce a project lead that will in turn define the next schedule of activities for him for the next phase of the testing cycle.

On the other hand, being a hardworking and dedicated game tester could lead to bigger doors of opportunity in the video games industry. First, having sufficient familiarity with how video games work would also give the tester skills that would be required if he is likewise interested in game designs. Not only that. He would also be rendered enough experience to qualify for game artist and/or game coder positions.

However, a neophyte game tester who wants to succeed and rise through the ranks in this industry must be patient and committed. He must have high tolerance for barely getting any interaction with those in the production department. He is also expected to have an outgoing personality despite the little interaction with people in the creative team. A keen eye for details is necessary for the preparation of an efficient project lead to be submitted to company clients. A video game tester job could be compared to any entry level jobs where the beginner is expected to grab every opportunities of exposure to prove himself worthy of promotion.
