Awards ceremonies for films are used not only to draw attention to cinematic artists but also to show off great--and sometimes less than great--fashion. The 2012 Golden Globes were no exception, and the red carpet did indeed boast some dazzling gowns, as well as some mediocre and downright awful ones. Below is a brief rundown of some highlights and lowlights.

Angelina Jolie turned heads in a silvery-white gown with a pop of blood-red at the neckline. This gown appears to have caused some controversy. Some fashion writers found the outfit disappointing, while others found it glamorous, thrilling, and befitting Jolie's reputation as an unconventional star. Her partner, Brad Pitt, looked like a rake from a bygone era, with long hair and a cane.
Natalie Portman also showed up in a gown with a flash of red at the neckline. However, her gown was a dark pink and of a very simple cut. It lacked the drama and startling contrasts of Jolie's gown. On the whole, it was a pretty but somewhat boring dress.

Eternal fashion rebel Tilda Swinton arrived in a periwinkle dress with matching jacket. She topped this off with a blond bouffant. This look may appear downright silly to some commentators, but for some fashion writers, like those at the hilarious Fugly blog, Swinton looks fabulous in outlandish outfits because, through sheer force of will, she has convinced audiences to judge her by a separate standard.
On the much less pleasant side of things, we have Lea Michele's dress, designed by Marchesa. This gown had a silver skirt plus sheer bodice and sleeves, with metallic details added on to protect Michele's modesty. However, the final effect was both vulgar and aging.

Erin Wasson, a model and designer, came to the awards ceremony dressed in a garment so skimpy that one hesitates to call it a dress. It is more like black underwear with strips of black lace and fringe attached to it. Yes, there is room for showing some skin on the red carpet, but skimpiness on this scale simply looks tacky and desperate.

So far, this article has been focusing mainly on women's fashion at this year's Golden Globes. This is not out of a wish to ignore the men--it simply reflects the fact that men's fashion for such occasions tends to be much more tame and restricted. Thus, men who wish to stand out have one of three options: 1) wear a classic and well-made suit or tuxedo with panache, 2) add one or two small but interesting details, perhaps in the form of accessories, or 3) rebel in a big way (such as wearing a very bright color), and risk looking clownish.

George Clooney, who usually gets praise for his appearances on red carpets, appears to have gone with Option 1, attending in a well-made tux without any new or exciting features. Of course, suits and tuxedos can be very stiff an uncomfortable, so a person who looks poised and at ease in a suit can be praised as stylish, even if the suit itself looks is not very distinctive. Idris Elba is one actor who chose Option 2. Most of his outfit could be classified as within the usual award show wear for men, but Elba punctuated this look with studded sneakers. Yes, they were designer sneakers, but a less confident, charismatic wearer would not have pulled them off. Elba, on the other hand, has been getting fashion kudos for his choice from various online publications. He balanced his aggressive footwear with a black flower pin on his jacket.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, however, arrived in a velvet tuxedo that did him no favors. Perhaps he could be upheld as an example of sartorial rebellion that doesn't quite succeed.

All in all, the Golden Globes red carpet provided a good show. Let us hope that the fashion at upcoming awards shows is just as entertaining.

Looking young and fit has become such an obsession in todays society that people are ready to do anything for it from taking hgh injections, calorie restriction to undergoing anti aging plastic surgery.
