Let us face it. Choosing the right ADHD treatment approach is no easy task. You might decide to give your child Ritalin or Vyvanse to help calm him down so that you can get on with living a semi normal life. No doubt you will have heard all the scary stories about the side effects and the long term health risks. That is par for the course.

What you cannot cope with is the fact that after three years or so, the effects of these drugs may be wearing off and if you have not given due attention to all the other behavior problems, social difficulties and academic issues, you suddenly find that you have a teenager who is almost impossible to handle.

This is partly due to not taking the right ADHD treatment approach as we all believe that drugs are the answer to our prayers. I think we are all guilty of that. But the tide is changing, Consider these facts.

First, let us look at the work done by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). They conducted an experiment involving about 300 children with ADHD who followed a three month course with their parents. They were aged between three and five years. Basically they were putting into action what all the psychologists are now telling us.

They started with effective parenting and made sure that there were natural consequences in place for inappropriate behavior. Then they helped parents establish routines and structures which made it easier for kids to organise their day and programs.

The result of this experiment was that about 33% of the children did not need any medication for their ADHD at the end of the course. They were not cured of course but they had been taught sufficient coping skills to help them get through the day. The kids were calmer, were less impulsive and were not jumping all over the place as is usually the case with hyperactivity. Their parents also knew how to organise an ADHD friendly home.

Now this should help to point us in the right direction to make an informed choice. We know that at least 30% of children on ADHD medication are likely to have real problems with the side effects. We know that parenting skills and organising the home are of paramount importance. Given that the medications are risky and only a partial answer, we should consider all the other ADHD treatment approaches so that we can solve the problem in a much more comprehensive way.

Love, cherish and protect your child. Experts now tell us that natural ADHD treatments combined with ADHD behavior therapy is by far the best ADHD treatment approach.
