What can I take to calm my nerves is usually a question people ask who are feeling anxious and stressed out and are unable to face any ordeal, no matter how trivial. Usually these people do not want to be one of the 164 million Americans who take anti-depressants every day and in a moment we will see why.

If you are worried and slightly depressed, you would be well advised to stay away from the anti depressants as a recent study from John Hopkins University published in the JAMA has revealed. It has concluded that the cases of moderate depression do not necessarily benefit from this type of treatment at all. This accounts for about 40% of the 164 million people I mentioned above. Severe depression is another matter and many people do benefit from these drugs.

But very often doctors are not up to speed at all on depression ailments and the exact symptoms which might actually justify prescribing anti-depressants. That is why they over prescribe and a simple question, like, what can I take to calm my nerves, is often just misdiagnosed . A sledgehammer to crack a nut is used.

Doctors and health care providers are also recognizing more and more the need to widen their perspectives in recommending various types of therapies which can really help in cases of mild to moderate depression. We should not forget that psychotherapy, music therapy, behavioural therapy, exercise, diet and some lifestyle changes all can have a definite beneficial effect on mental health generally. Unfortunately the general public is not wired up to this as yet and that is why a massive raising of awareness needs to be done.

When the question, what can I take to calm my nerves is asked, the patient needs to be aware of the following factors which will impact on his or her mental wellbeing. He needs to be aware about how nutrition plays a vital role in serotonin levels which in turn determine our state of mental health, what are the good mood foods, what are the foods that can lead to mood swings, which herbs and botanical ingredients can really help.

The very popular herb St. John's Wort is widely prescribed in Germany for mild depression. It far outstrips demand for the anti depressant Prozac. Now there is a lesson to be learned there. If you are not sure that medication may be for you, why not have a look at my website to help you make the right decision.
