How To Calm My Nerves

You will never guess one of my ways on how to calm my nerves! I call my mom before an interview or exam and her reassuring voice helps me overcome stress and relax. This always works for me but I did not think there was any scientific evidence for this at all. But there is and it is a fascinating area.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-.Madison have done a study where they exposed children to various stressful situations like taking a maths test in front of a group of strangers. Others had to make a speech without anyprior warning or practice. Their cortisol levels as a result of the stress rocketed and their heart beats became noticeably faster.

Researchers wanted to know whether the mother's presence or physical contact or even a phone call where the kids heard her voice would have any effect at all. They knew in theory that the so called 'love hormone' called oxytocin which is so important in the mother-child bonding would actually work in stressful situations like these. This is a mamalian homone and plays a role in pair bonding and in maternal behavior.

There were three groups. One group had to watch a video of 75 minutes. One group had some physical contact with their mothers while the third group got to talk with their moms on their mobiles. Both groups who had the physical or telephonic contact with their moms benefited enormously in that their cortisol levels fell and this effect lasted until well after the test. Researchers also found that their levels of oxytocin (the love hormone ) also increased.

This was the evidence to show how I calm my nerves was actually scientifically valid. Of course a mother's presence is always reassuring but now we understand a little better why this is the case.

Other ways on how to calm my nerves which I have used are : learning to relax by doing some physical activity, take Bach floral remedies when under a lot of stress, eating enough Omega 3 fatty acids to reduce adrenaline and cortisol, get enough restful continuous sleep and eat more foods which can increase serotonin which is esential for a good mood.

These then are just some of the ways on how to calm my nerves. You might also like to consider whether a herbal remedy to help you boost your mood would be useful.
