There has been a lot of discussion recently about the role of the mother in treating ADHD in a young child. It is very often the mother who has to take responsibility and decision which impact on her child's health. In ADHD, this is especially true. It falls on the mother to ensure that there is an ADHD friendly home and that routines are adhered to. It is very often the mother who has to deal with teachers and schools too.

It is also interesting to look at the health of the mother as well in the period of her pregnancy and immediately after the birth of her child. I am not mentioning this in any way which might seek to blame the mother. But it is useful for those mothers to watch out for these things so that the chances of their children getting ADHD could be at least lessened.

The Medical Care Journal in January 2009 published a study which suggests that mothers of ADHD children were much more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and obesity. They were also spending much more on health care both before and after the birth of their child. This study suggests that better maternal health could help to lessen the incidence of ADHD. The study looked at three groups of mothers, those whose children had ADHD, those who did not and mothers of children with asthma.

Treating ADHD in young child can be approached from many angles. We can ensure that a proper diet, exercise, routines and structures in place in the home and affectionate support will all play their part. There are also behavior strategies in place and the parents are trained to deal with behavior issues in a united way so that good cop, bad cop parenting can be avoided.

Finally treating ADHD in a young child will centre a lot on reducing stress levels. The actual condition causes stress in that a child cannot bear changes in routine or indeed having to wait any length of time. Stress itself in any form can increase levels of impulsivity and inattention.

One great way to reduce stress levels is to look at diet where we can actually help to increase the serotonin in the brain. That means, calmer and more cheerful children. Mothers can opt for the more complex carbohydrates and adding in protein at breakfast can work wonders in keeping moods steadier during the whole morning. A sugary snack or cereals will probably create a sugar spike and later a crash, which is not good for a child with ADHD.

These are just starting points for looking at ways of treating ADHD in a young child.

Natural ADHD treatment could be a few simple parenting strategies, just for starters. It can also form the foundation for learning about what is ADHD.
