Cold, dry weather will leave the skin dry and parched. These are exactly the type of winter skin problems we experience precisely because these are the main weather conditions. The lack of humidity and the fact that central heating in our homes tends to dry the air out, will all have a negative effect on our skin.

Another reason of course is the fact that as we experience lower body temperatures, the supply of blood to the skin is severely reduced. That means that the oil producing glands and the sweat glands are not getting their usual supply so they cut back on their production levels. That means dry and shrunken skin all round.

The fact that we are not thirsty at all because we are not sweating as much should not mean that we cut back on our water consumption. This aggravates the problem so we should drink our usual quota of water.

Did you know that many foods can contribute to dry skin as well? The fact is that if we eat spicy foods and chocolate means that the epidermis gets irritated, thus aggravating the problem. Coffee and alcohol tend to have a dehydrating effect.

How to prevent dry skin can be solved by trying to do some exercise as the sweat glands will be forced into action and this will help to alleviate the problem by improving circulation. Then there is the whole aspect of cleansing and moisturizing. We should avoid hot water and always opt for tepid, also when we take our baths and showers. Try adding colloidal oatmeal to your bath as it is very soothing.

As for moisturizers, choose one which is right for your skin type. The main complaints are usually that they are too greasy and when applied to hands, they are never really absorbed properly. The other complaints concern the fragrance issue. This could mean that synthetic ones are being used and as these are full of chemicals, it might be wiser to choose another brand.

Most skincare experts recommend that you find a moisturizer with natural humectants. Glycerine is supposed to be one of these and attracts water from the air and keeps the skin nice and moist. But in winter, there is very little humidity so it will start to do the opposite in that it will start to suck the existing moisture from the epidermis.

But looking for emollients which will help to lock in the moisture is a great idea and the avocado and rosehip are great for this purpose.

We have seen that some of the winter skin problems and how to prevent dry skin can be easily dealt with, provided we know what we are doing. We should also be careful to choose skin friendly products so that we do not exacerbate the situation and make it even worse!

You deserve much better than to be fobbed off with second best skincare products. Discover some really effective ingredients used in winter skin problems. Robert Winterson has written extensively on natural skincare.
