Have you ever Googled your own name? Checking how you are being portrayed out there on the internet is probably almost as important as checking your credit score. We all know about identify theft, but how many of us think about what is out there on the web about us?

We all know how easy it is to put information out the internet. There are plenty of sites that don't care what you write and there is no one there to stop you from writing whatever you want about whoever you want.

We also know how events are often portrayed in the news which is then transferred to the internet. Everyone loves as juicy story. If it later turns out to be false, that fact is buried if it is even published in the first place. If your name is somehow out there associated with that story, it is out there in cyberspace for all eternity.

They start putting false information out there. The next thing you know, you are going for a job interview and your prospective employer decides to do his own informal background check and there you are, on the first page, with some story about you being drunk, being arrested, being a cheat—whatever the case may be—and none of it is true. No matter how much you try to explain, the damage has been done.

What do you do if someone decides to go after you via the internet? While it is virtually impossible to get content off the web once it is there, you can take steps to make sure the information is buried on page 150. Granted, someone who is persistent will still find it, but at least the casual looker will not see the information.

The best thing you can do is flood the internet with positive content associated with your name. There several steps you can take to accomplish this goal.

Write an original article of at least 410 words. Write about something positive and post it on as many sites as you can. There are lots of sites that will let you post an article for free to the internet. Putting something good on the internet is jus as easy as putting something bad.

After you publish the article, get your friends/family write a comment about the article. It is even better if they can use your name in their comment.

If you don't want to write an original article you can quote sections of other articles on your blog or other blogs. Be sure to leave at least a 50 word comment of how you liked (or didn't like) the article.

Get you family/friends to leave comments on Twitter, IMs, or bookmark comments. Be sure they use your full name in the first 10 words of the comments in order to be read in the rankings. This also includes social page comments, and discussion forums.

If you do this consistently, you will see the negative information fall farther and farther down the list when you do a search. Be sure to monitor the progress. The more you can get your name out there in a positive light, the faster the negative information will "disappear" from searches.
