This is an interesting question but one that any business owner needs to ask themselves. And in today's climate the answer is a resounding 'yes'. It is important not to get left behind which means having a mobile friendly website that has the power to attract new audiences around the globe.
More and more people are choosing to access business websites via their smartphone than a desktop computer or laptop.
There are numerous web marketing agencies and web design companies who can provide you with a mobile website. But there are few things to consider before you go ahead.
The rise of mcommerce
Mobile commerce or 'mcommerce' for short is a fast growing area of business which draws upon the latest developments in mobile technologies. It has been developed in response to the ever increasing uptake of mobile devices such as smartphones and reflects the general public's insatiable appetite for mobile phones.
But what you need to take into account is the way people use mobile phones which are very different to the way they use a computer. This means that they use a mobile website in a different way which is reflected in the design.
Reasons for choosing an mcommerce website
Mcommerce offers a range of possibilities for the business owner which includes:
• An additional sales channel
• An additional marketing tool
• Can be accessed at any time of the day
• Customers can make price comparisons whilst at home or on the move.
• Particularly appeals to a younger demographic
• Low development costs
Another important factor is this: your competitors may not have a mobile version of their website which gives you an advantage. This is your chance to stand out from the rest and attract a new audience.
A mobile website can be accessed on all types of smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices.
Mobile website issues
There are few things to consider when building an mcommerce website which include the slower performance speeds, small screen space, content optimisation, navigation, page size etc.
Bear in mind that it takes someone longer to find information on a mobile website compared to a normal site so ensure that the most important information appears at the top of the screen. Put this in a single column rather than several.
Ensure that your customers can navigate easily through your site. Group information in lists and provide back buttons and links wherever possible.
Keep images to a minimum.
Try to avoid content which has to be zoomed in or out to read. This is awkward and time consuming especially when on the move so make sure your content is of a large enough size which aids with readability.
As with anything you need to plan your mobile website but a bit of forethought will result in a very useful and lucrative site.
