The home wind turbine is a general category of products that will cut power costs at your house. However, there are 2 major types of these that you need to know about to adequately assess the opportunities you have for power cost reduction in the future. The first thing you must do of course is understand the options that you have for your particular location.

Rest assured those are very different than the options that other people have had a their places. The only way to get down to the level of detail that you need is to get a clean sheet of paper out and sketch out all of the questions that you may have to resolve. One of the first ones that you will have to get a grip on is how much energy do you have on your property. That is not a simple question to answer. You need to get some data from an anemometer and a data logger. If you really want to be accurate you probably need to let the anemometer collect data for up to a year. That is a long time though, and many people don't want to wait that long so you can get by with 6 to 9 months, but you can't really get by with a whole lot less than that.

These are the 2 major types of home wind turbine that you need to know about...

HAWT, or horizontal axis wind turbine - The horizontal axis wind turbine is the oldest and most efficient of the options that you have. It looks a lot like a classic windmill. The reason it is so efficient is it has a tail section that articulates in both clockwise and clockwise directions in order to allow it to find the wind that is the strongest. However, it is not necessarily the most attractive wind turbine out there.

VAWT, or vertical axis wind turbine - The vertical axis wind turbine kit is usually used on roofs and is more aesthetically pleasing. It is not nearly as efficient as a horizontal axis wind turbine because it has no mechanism to direct it into the most compelling wind. It simply spins in whatever direction the winds blow, so it will be moving clockwise in one minute and in the next minute, counterclockwise.

In conclusion, if you understand these 2 types of home wind turbine, you basically have 90% of the product offerings out there covered.
