Wind turbine kits can be a tremendous benefit for the homeowner but they can also be an albatross. There are many wind turbines around the country that are now just expensive ornaments on roofs. Many people bought these turbines thinking they could turn them quickly into energy producing devices and later found out that they were a lot more complicated than they originally thought and that they need outside help to complete them.

That outside help can be rather expensive to obtain. Therefore, wind turbines are not a one-size-fits-all solution that are super-easy to implement. You need to take some time to really understand your specific situation and whether or not they are going to work for you based on the limitations that I'm going to list below.

These are the 3 main ways these wind turbine kits can fail you...

They don't make the power you expect - If your expectation is to power your whole house, then you may be let down, when you can only power a small portion of your house. Many people's expectations are to get off the power grid and a lot of efforts at independent power production are derailed because these expectations were too ambitious. Expectations are usually that if they have a 2 kilowatt wind turbine for example, that they will produce 2 kilowatts of power. That is not the case, however. It could well be that because of the wind in your community, you will only able to produce half that much power. So, your expectations have a lot to do with the success that you feel that you've achieved with the process. It is a lot better to be honest with yourself up front and and see both sides of what your likely wind output in terms of electricity will be.

They don't pass permitting inspection - Permitting is a huge issue these days. Many communities will not allow these devices. Or, they require that they are to be placed a certain distance from the edge of the roof. Or, that they are required to be placed a certain distance from the neighbor's property. You just need to understand what your specific restrictions are and how you can work with the powers that be in order to achieve what you want to achieve.

They require frequent replacement parts and maintenance by professionals - Some wind turbine kits wear out rather quickly. For example, the blade system usually is what wears out the fastest. You should not bemoan this fact because it could well be that your blade system was not very good in the first place. It could well be too that there are aftermarket products that will significantly improve on the blade design that your original wind turbine came with.

In conclusion, wind turbine kits can let you down in a lot of ways, but to a large extent, these problems are avoidable with a little legwork on your part before you dive in and buy one of these devices.
