Harvesting Water with a Rain Water Tank

Rain water is free and can be taken advantage of by using rain water tanks to collect the rain water as it falls. Harvesting rain water is a great way to collect run off of rain water to use later in the event of a water shortage or to simply save on water costs. The water collected can be used for agricultural purposes such as watering gardens and crops, household use such as running washing machines, washing dishes, showering and flushing toilets or for a supply of drinking water if a clean drinking water source is unavailable due to contamination or a natural disaster. However, rain water can often become contaminated as it is collected so it is important to ensure that the water is drinking quality before consuming it.

Filter the Water from Rain Water Tanks

Filtration systems are commonly used to filter the water from a rain water tank if it is going to be used for consumption. Once the rain water has been properly filtered and all pathogens have been removed it is entirely safe to drink. If there is any doubt it is best to use PH strips to check the safety of the water to ensure that it is safe to drink. Some paint and roofing materials are known to contaminate the run off of rain water. If your home has lead based paint it is not advised that rain water tanks be used to collect drinking water.

Materials Used in and Capacity of Rain Water Tanks

These tanks are made of a variety of materials such as polyethylene, galvanized steel and stainless steel among other materials. The materials used are rust resistant and are typically made to block out light in order to prevent algae formation due to exposure to light or heat. Most rain water tanks have an internal liner to protect the quality of the water as well as a screen to prevent external contamination from entering the tank such as insects and other debris particles. Typical rain water tanks range in size from 100 gallons to 20,000 gallons. Industrial size rain water tanks are available that can hold amounts up to 100,000 gallons of water.

Summary on Rain Water Tanks

Using rain water tanks is an energy efficient way to reduce the amount of water consumed and can be considered an energy efficient purchase. Many modern businesses use rain water tanks to collect water that can then be recycled and reused leading to lower expenses on water costs overall. These tanks are also useful in diminishing problems due to excess storm water runoff and can prevent many problems from occurring. So, if you would like to decrease the cost of monthly water supply consider purchasing a rain water tank. Although the expense may be more upfront, it can save a lot of money over time by recycling rain water that can then be used for sanitation reasons, dishwasher, washing machines, toilets and any other common source of water consumption. The amount of money that can be saved can easily make the cost of a rain water tank justified over the course of time.
