Some young artists who are presently seeking out a new career may have what it takes to miss out on a college education and land a good job, but these people may be grossly underestimating the benefit of actually obtaining a graphic design degree. You may be awesome at sketching detailed figures, painting landscapes, or editing photos, all with your favorite computer software, but there is a lot more to this particular career than software mastery.

A proper design school will teach you a number of styles in a variety of software and actually inform you on the business side of things and how to really sell your work, which are attributes any good employer will be looking for. Not only can a good graphic design school show you how to work in a variety of styles and mediums, or how put together and sell your own artistic visions, they can also provide you with the documentation that proves you can do it.

When you go out and get a job with a nearby firm, or even start doing some freelance work in your off time, you may be surprised to see that people are asking for a variety of work that includes design directions and styles that you aren't familiar with. You could end up handing in what you feel is the best work you've ever done, only to be disappointed to find your work being rejected because it is not in the style the client was wanting and not suitable for their intentions. If you want to make sure you can offer your clients precisely what they are hoping for, you have to actually be capable of producing that kind of material.

If an artist was provided with a set of goals, presented with a vision for what the client would like to see and what they expect the artwork to accomplish for them, there's no guarantee that they'll be picturing the same thing. In cases where there is a creative gap between the artist and the client, a lot of valuable design can be lost in translation, but a clever artist should be able to cross that gap by presenting the client with his own vision and really selling them on it.

While you are doing various projects throughout your time in class, you will be able to constantly add to your portfolio, which is an important asset when proving yourself to potential clients. And of course, you won't have much hope of finding yourself a proper design job without your graphic design degree, so you surely don't want to be without one.
