Problems and diseases of the thyroid gland can be some of the most devastating, as they throw your entire metabolic system off balance. And because no two people are alike, no two thyroids need the same type of treatment in the case of an abnormality of the thyroid. That is why sometimes, medicine with a set amount of milligrams may not always be the answer, and natural thyroid medicine might work better for some people, because it allows the body to regulate itself.
The thyroid is part of the glandular system, and all of the glands in your body accept 'orders' from the pituitary gland. The glands release hormones based on what the pituitary gland dictates is necessary for any given moment and situation in your body. While it is true that millions of American's suffer from some type of thyroid problem, and that most of them are women, maybe the problem is with the pituitary gland. Sometimes, a problem with the thyroid is not an isolated problem and people have problems with multiple glands at once. There is just so much going on, that perhaps drugs that are made to focus on just one thing are not always the best answer. And a more natural and holistic approach that works with the whole body being regulate is the answer.
The first natural thyroid medicine we're going to talk about is iodine. Iodine is what goes into the thyroid gland, and the hormones are what come out. The iodine is the building block of the thyroid gland. 70 micrograms is the least amount of iodine needed daily for normal thyroid function. 150 micrograms is what the US Food and Nutrition Board and Institute of Medicine recommend.
Iodine is not a cure all, however, and you should check with your doctor and find out what is best for you. But there are some things that you should know, that might slip from your doctor's mind. Calcium and iron block the absorption of thyroid medication, so much so that taking a multivitamin containing these with your thyroid medicine could prevent nearly all of the medicine to pass right through you. Always take any multivitamin two hours after your thyroid medication.
Lastly, the thyroid gland excretes two hormones known as T3 and T4. Mostly, your body uses T3. A large amount of the T4 you produce is later converted into T3. The chemical element Selenium is required for this conversion to take place. Without selenium, your thyroid may be producing enough T3 and T4 for all your normal functions, but if the T4 isn't being converted properly, which your body is counting on, then that could cause a deficiency.
As always, please check with your doctor before starting any type of supplement regimen. As stated above, sometimes thyroid problems are found in conjunction with other problems within the body, and what may be good for one part, might not be good for another. When your health is on the line, safety comes first.
